From our previous conference experience, we anticipate our 200+ conference attendees will primarily consist of young doctors as well as a sizeable minority of allied health professionals and masters students. It is likely that the theme of this particular conference will serve to attract a number of economics students and graduates. Amongst doctors in the UK, interest in global health has increased tremendously over the past decade for a number of reasons. The work of organisations such as Medsin UK, Medact and THET have served to make an interest in international health issues more mainstream in medical schools, hospitals and health centres. The proliferation of elective qualifications in global health, both undergraduate in the form of intercalated degrees and, for postgraduates, master’s degrees and diplomas, has greatly increased the number of doctors with the knowledge and desire to work and undertake research in global health. As a result, we anticipate that our medically-qualified delegates will be well-informed, enthusiastic and discerning doctors looking to familiarise themselves with the key issues arising from commercialisation of healthcare, and to inform their choices of career path in international health. Other delegates will include the allied health professions, including nursing, professional therapists of various disciplines and other health service specialists. From previous experience, these delegates are more likely to be established in their careers. Again, they will be well-informed, globally aware health professionals looking to learn more about commercialisation in health and to explore potential career options. Students working towards a master’s degree in international health or an allied field are regular attendees of and contributors to Alma Mata conferences and events. They are invariably very experienced in global health and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many are clinicians or health managers with personal experience of working in the developing world. We anticipate a large minority of our attendees will be studying towards a master’s degree and will be using the conference for education, careers advice and networking. In the past, we have found Alma Mata members to be particularly responsive to sponsors who operate with ethical considerations at the forefront. Potential sponsors are invited to contact Alma Mata here to obtain a copy of the full conference proposal and to discuss terms. Alternatively, please call +44 (0) 208 133 9801.
