Mission / Vision Statement:
ICN’s mission is to represent nursing internationally and influence health policy world-wide.
ICN's mission is to lead societies towards better health. ICN works to we harness the knowledge and enthusiasm of the entire nursing profession to promote healthy lifestyles, healthy workplaces, and healthy communities. ICN fosters the health of societies as well as individuals by supporting strategies of sustainable development that mitigate poverty, pollution, and other underlying causes of illness.
Main areas of interest:
ICN works in three main programme areas to improve nursing and health. These are known as ICN's Pillars and they are:
- Professional Practice
- Regulation
- Social Economic Welfare
ICN’s Code of Ethics is the basis for national codes world-wide. ICN’s work in many areas of professional practice, regulation and socio-economic welfare internationally guides the work in each country, particularly related to nursing standards and health and nursing policy.
ICN provides a wide range of publications on current issues and our Position Statements are available free of charge. Each year we publish and disseminate the International Nurses’ Day Kit, for use in the world-wide celebrations of International Nurses’ Day on the 12th of May.
ICN also has important professional practice and socio-economic welfare projects (Leadership for Change, ICNP®, Negotiation in Leadership) ongoing in Latin America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Africa.
Structure of Organisation:
ICN is a federation of 127 national nurses' associations (NNAs), representing millions of nurses worldwide. ICN works directly with these member associations on the issues of importance to the nursing profession.
There is no individual membership to ICN; nurses who are part of their national nurses' association are automatically part of ICN. A list of member associations for each country can be seen at:
