University of Alberta: International Intercultural Health Initiative

Course Outline:
Lectures with an international health content:
1. Introductory block
What is global health? One hour to introduce concepts of the burden of disease indicators and determinants.
2. Practice of medicine and dentistry block
Why is the third world the third world? An hour's examination of climate, geography, agriculture, trade and economics.
3. Triple I Block
Infectious diseases globally, two hour lecture and two hour small group sessions discussing examples of solving problems related to HIV, TB, Diarrhea, childhood pneumonia, management in low income settings.
4. Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, renal block
TB, the global situation and its relationship to local situations - two hours.
5. Oncology
The tobacco epidemic and the tobacco industry, one hour.
6. OB GYN block
Genital mutilation, one hour.
7. Pediatrics is not a block but all students have a block of clinical teaching and all work through paediatric based cases in a third world setting.
