Are you in UK General Practice training? Do you have an interest in Global Health?
We would like to hear your opinions, questions, stories and puzzles about how to integrate Global Health and General Practice Training.
For example, did you know that the London Deanery offers a number of places where GP trainees can take a year out between ST2 and ST3 to work in a South African rural hospital? Six months of this is counted towards their UK GP training...
Have you thought about taking time out during your training? What kind of response have you had?
London's first ever regular global health social. Come and enjoy a relaxed, friendly evening where people interested in global health can meet, chat and exchange ideas and experiences. We look forward to meeting you!

Hi Emily,
I'm coming to the end of my reg year and looking in to possibilities to do some overseas work (either academic or clinical) in the next year. I did the international health BSc and have done some interesting projects in the past, but nothing since I qualified. I'm trying to find a way to keep my foot in the door of GP, whilst engaging in an interesting (and productive) project, whilst not spending months on end away from my husband. Hmmmm. I'm not sure if this is possible!

I'm on the VTS in Sheffield, hoping to get more involved somewhere developing after some great experiences as a medical student- but not sure where to go with this at the moment.
I did chat with one of the programme directors about "out of programme experience", and they seemed quite positive about it, but it is a deanery based process for which you have to apply at least 12 months in advance (i.e. by the end of august 2009 for anything aug 2010-2011).
At the moment I think it is probably easier to leave it until I have completed the scheme- and then perhaps do a DTMH- but have itchy feet..
Anyone out there know of other ways to stay involved?
