Cottonseed cultivation exposes children employed in the industry to poisonous pesticides

India has distinction of having the largest area under cotton cultivation in the world and has been a pioneer in developing hybrid cotton seeds for commercial use. The Indian cottonseed industry is also marked by the highest proportion of child labour in its workforce.

The local seed farmer justifies the continued and increasing employment of children, particularly girls.


Waste Couture: Environmental Impact of the Clothing Industry

The apparel market plays a major role in the global economy. However, each step of the clothing life cycle generates potential environmental and occupational health hazards, from the growing of the fiber crops to the disposal of used clothing. A nascent movement in the fashion industry is taking steps to make clothing more sustainable.

This event seeks to encourage a more holistic approach towards thinking about energy security, and will mark the launch of the publication Oil Wars, edited by Mary Kaldor, Terry Karl and Yahia Said.
Mary Kaldor is Professor of Global Governance and co-director, Centre for the Study of Global Governance, LSE. Yahia Said is research fellow, Centre for the Study of Global Governance, LSE and head of the Middle East Revenue Watch Programme, Open Society Institute. George Soros is chairman of the Open Society Institute. Professor Sir Nicholas Stern is the IG Patel Professor of Economics & Government at LSE.
