Mission / Vision Statement:
The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) aims to help coordinate, support and influence global efforts to combat a portfolio of major diseases of the poor and disadvantaged.
Objectives:
Research and Development: to improve existing and develop new approaches for preventing, diagnosing, treating, and controlling neglected infectious diseases which are applicable, acceptable and affordable by developing endemic countries, which can be readily integrated into the health services of these countries, and which focus on the health problems of the poor.
Training and Strengthening: to strengthen the capacity of developing endemic countries to undertake the research required for developing and implementing these new and improved disease control approaches.
Main areas of interest:
TDR focuses on 10 major neglected infectious tropical diseases that disproportionally affect poor and marginalized populations:
- Afican trypanosomiasis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/tryp/default.htm
- Chagas disease: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/chagas/default.htm
- Dengue: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/dengue/default.htm
- Leishmaniasis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/leish/default.htm
- Leprosy: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/leprosy/default.htm
- Lymphatic filariasis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/lymphfil/default.htm
- Malaria: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/malaria/default.htm
- Onchocerciasis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/oncho/default.htm
- Schistosomiasis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/schisto/default.htm
- Tuberculosis: http://www.who.int/tdr/diseases/tb/default.htm
Structure of Organisation:
TDR is an independent global programme of scientific collaboration. Established in 1975 and is co-sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO)and operates within a broad framework of intergovernmental and interagency cooperation and participation.
TDR is governed by three bodies: the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB), the Standing Committee and the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC). WHO is the executive agency.
Opportunities:
Research capability strengthening is one of TDR's major goals. Training, building research teams, partnerships, linkages, infrastructure development and improved communication are all supported by TDR to enhance the capacity of target disease-endemic countries to carry out research.
Since its inception in 1975, TDR has provided support to train over 1200 scientists. Many of these scientists have subsequently become focal points upon which to build research groups, and some have become leading experts in their fields of research, both nationally and internationally.
Information on research training grants that support higher degree training (locally or regionally) or short-term postdoctoral fellowships in biomedical or social science research can be found at:
