CRASH COURSE IN OVERSEAS MEDICINE (3 days)
PRE-DEPARTURE PREPARATION

Wednesday 5th May 2010
9.30 am to 5.30 pm and dinner (at a local restaurant) at 7.00 pm

Thursday 6th May 2010
9 am to 5.30 pm

Friday 7th May 2010  
9.00 am to 3pm

Sandford Education Centre,  Keynsham Road,  Cheltenham,  Glos

Space for 16 delegates – doctors or senior nurses/midwives who are
contemplating going to work overseas in a tropical environment

Course content:

  • Personal Preparation
  • Finance and economics in overseas medical practice
  • Ethical issues with working in developing countries
  • MSF and VSO seminars
  • Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) and health links
  • Trauma/immediate care/Fracture management
  • Hands-on workshops: Airway; cut-down/central venous/intra-osseous access; chest drain; plastering
  • Malaria
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Malnutrition (Marasmus, Kwashiorkor)
  • TB, leprosy
  • Reproductive health and illness
  • Obstetrics and emergencies, Caesarean section, Ventouse delivery, The Kiwi cup
  • Basic dentistry
  • Sanitation, water supply and diarrhoeal diseases
  • The use of “simple medicines” and The WHO formulary
  • Eye problems
  • Dermatology
