Main areas of interest:
About Burma:
Burma, a country of around 50 million people is ruled by fear. A military machine of 500,000 soldiers denies a whole nation its most basic rights. Aung San Suu Kyi, pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate, symbolises the struggle of Burma's people to be free.
Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal and corrupt regimes in the world, responsible for:
- The widespread use of forced labour
- 1.5 million people forced from their lands
- Around 1300 political prisoners, many of whom are routinely tortured
- As many as 70,000 child soldiers - more than any other country in the world.
- Rape as a weapon of war against ethnic women and children
- Nearly half the government budget spent on the military.
- One in ten babies die before their fifth birthday.
Activities:
- Direct lobbying of the UK government and EU to improve government and commercial policy on Burma.
- Campaigning: Details of current campaigns can be seen at:
http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/campaign.html
- Public education: Raising public awareness of the issues relating to Burma.
- Lobbying businesses: Foreign investment in Burma has supplied this regime with billions of pounds, helping the regime to expand the army and maintain power. The Burma Campaign UK works to cut the economic lifeline by increasing pressure on companies to withdraw from Burma and raising. public awareness.
- Research: The Burma Campaign UK provides analysis on the situation in Burma to the media and government.
