UK - supporting TAC's work in South Africa

Mission / Vision Statement:
The Treatment Action Campaign is a South African pressure group campaigning for greater access to treatment for all South Africans, by raising public awareness and understanding about issues surrounding the availability, affordability and use of HIV treatments.
Friends of TAC is a UK-based (London at present) group of supporters of TAC and its objectives, which aims to raise funds for the treatment of TAC activists and non-TAC members. South Africans with AIDS are dying at a rate of 800 a day. TAC activists are dying every week.
FoTAC seeks to:
- raise awareness of and educate the UK public with regard to HIV/AIDS in South
and Southern Africa
- lobby governments and opinion formers for support on specific campaigns and
issues around HIV/AIDS e.g. drug prices, treatment of children with HIV/AIDS
- raise money to support the work of TAC
FoTAC is looking to expand outside of London. Their official launch is happening later this year. They have recently been invited to join a national student and youth coalition campaigning on HIV/AIDS. This coalition includes SPW which coordinates the Student Stop AIDS campaign, a coalition of student
campaigning groups which together reach out to almost every university in
the country. NUS, MedSIN, People and Planet, Action Aid Space, UN Youth & Students Association and Stop AIDS societies are all members.

Main areas of interest:
HIV/AIDS, Health & Human Rights, Sex Education

Structure of Organisation:
London-based but looking to expand outside of the capital.

Opportunities:
There are opportunities for individuals to get involved with organising the launch event. Please contact aska.leslie@almamata.net for further details.
