The Global Forum for Health Research believes that more health research needs to be devoted to improving the health of people in developing countries.
The Global Forum is working to:
- Change the priorities governing how existing resources for health research are used.
- Encourage new resources that will be directed to research in the neglected areas.
- Foster research in the neglected areas to reduce the burdens of disease and disability.
Its central objective is to promote more health research to combat the neglected diseases and conditions that are major sources of ill health in developing countries and to reduce other inequities in health and health research.
The Global Forum aims to initiate research in the following 5 priority identified areas:
- Sexual and reproductive health
- Equity and poverty
- Priority setting
- Research capacity strengthening
- Resource flows
The annual Forum meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research is one of its most prominent activities to focus attention on the neglected health research needs of developing countries. It is widely recognized as "the" annual gathering on health research. Forums mainly take place outside of Switzerland, with the aim of engaging with different regions and facilitating the participation of a larger proportion of contributors from developing countries.
The Global Forum for Health Research is an independent international foundation established in Geneva. The Foundation Council is responsible for defining the objectives, priority areas and the long-term vision of the Global Forum. The Foundation Council is the highest policy and decision-making body and is composed of a maximum of 20 members who represent the constituencies of the Global Forum. Additionally, the Foundation Council works alongside a Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee (STRATEC), composed of six members selected from Council members.
The Global Forum is supported by the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Rockefeller Foundation and the governments of Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Global Forum’s annual meeting provides the opportunity for presentations and exchange of views on key issues on the global health agenda. To take part in a forum:
