Current Position:
Coordinator MSF (Doctors without Borders) HIV Program in Lusikisiki – rural health district – South Africa; 2003 to present.
Managing comprehensive HIV program including awareness, prevention and treatment including 750 people on antiretrovirals at primary health care level, responsible to supervise 40 NGO staff, close collaboration with 40 department of health nurses and health care managers, training all categories of health care workers, doing clinic consultations three days a week. This is rewarding as it is a step towards overcoming drug company overpricing of essential medicines.

Career Profile: Dr John Walley

Current Position:
Senior Lecturer in International Public Health/Director of TB-HIV research programme.
Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development,
Institute of Health Sciences and Public Health Research, Faculty of medicine,
University of Leeds.
I believe that the rewards of my work include that I am helping better health in low income countries. My work actively supports the development of programmes (such as TB and HIV) in
particular countries.
The challenges I face in my current work are:
Finding time to doing every thing, including being a good parent! (as for any doctor I suspect),
Limited time for clinical work (doing only one session of GP in UK or when overseas).
Spending too much time in front of a computer (but seems worth it when visiting and working with collaborating colleagues in developing countries – i.e. when being directly involved in the PH work and seeing the improvements in services/ programmes).

Professor Peter Winstanley

Current Position:
Professor of Clinical Pharmacology.
Director of the Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre,
University of Liverpool.

Dr David Osrin

Current Position:
Clinical Research Fellow in International Child Health, International Perinatal Care Unit, Institute of Child Health, London.
Since 1997, on a number of contracts.
The post involves coordinating MSc modules in international child health and perinatal epidemiology, contributing to departmental activities such as other teaching and advocacy, and research. The research involves collaboration with groups in Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Malawi, and entails extensive periods abroad in each calendar year. Until recently, I have been based in Nepal, with annual trips to teach in London. This has now changed, and I aim to spend about 6 months per year at the Institute of Child Health.
The rewards of my job are day-to-day enjoyment without the deferment of gratification, the production of a corpus of work, the possibility of visiting and really getting to know people in many different places, and the contacts I have made through teaching students from diverse backgrounds.
The challenges are an almost total lack of job security, a heavy workload that requires aggressive time management, and the possibility of projects collapsing at any moment.
